Ethics Week webinar: Blurred Lines: Should journalists be defined and regulated?

The SPJ Ethics Committee will host a virtual panel discussion, “Blurred Lines: Should journalists be defined and regulated?” The panel will examine how to identify reporters and ethical journalism in a sea of digital content creators, activists masquerading as reporters and misinformation. Panelists include Olivia Hicks, The Minnesota Star Tribune sports reporter and Gen Z journalist who writes about young people and their understanding of journalism; Liz Kelly Nelson, founder of Project C, which trains independent news creators, and former executive at Gannett and Vox; Aaron Parnas, digital news creator and “Newsfluencer” with 8 million-plus social media followers; and Erik Ugland, Marquette University associate professor who studies how journalists are defined. SPJ Ethics Committee Chair Dan Axelrod will moderate.

When: April 28, 2026, 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm Eastern (U.S.)
